I find, collect, select and then painstakingly recreate images from discarded, ephemeral material. I work mainly from used shopping lists and run-over phonecards, and employ materials and techniques normally associated with the craft of bookbinding to make the works.
It is important that I create a play between how the image presents and how the image is made. I do this by accurately translating the image, and therefore the movement, from the source material to either a panel, a drawing or a book. Whilst the image looks spontaneous and, importantly, carries the same
momentum with which the original marks were made, the recreation is actually made by the slow and meticulous process of, for example, gold tooling on leather.
