APRIL 2008

Last Meeting
At our evening meeting at Communicare last month, Eileen Smith organized table-top horse racing. Bets were placed, odds worked out, and racing commenced with two races over the jumps and one flat race. We almost had a Demolition Derby, when helpers were knocking down horses whilst reaching for the one that had to be moved. This is determined by the throw of a dice and a second dice is used for the number of spaces a horse moves in one go.
Everyone laughed and a good time was had by all and a few even took home some winnings. The evening ended with our usual raffle and refreshments were served.
Monies raised over the last month are as follows:-
14.3.08 Easter Bingo/Devil's Hole
77 supporters raised £365.00
25.3.08 Raffle/Communicare
Members bought tickets totalling £27.00
Donations via collecting boxes for March 2008
amounted to £358.06
4.4.08 Bingo Night/Devil's Hole
72 supporters raised £224.50
5/6.4.08 Crafts Fayre/Living Legend
Card sales totalled £116.15
Many thanks to everyone who helped on the stall. A raffle was organised by the craftworkers of which Parkinson's will receive one third of the proceeds in due course.
Awareness Week
Jersey Branch had a very successful week last week. Our Bingo Night and the card stall at the Living Legend preceded the week long can shake at Checkers Superstore each day from 8 a.m. - 6 p.m. (total amount collected will be included in next month's newsletter).
To launch Awareness Week, on Monday 7th, Sarah Palmer from BBC Radio Jersey, interviewed Steve Ford, the Chief Executive of the Parkinson's Disease Society in the U.K. about the disease itself, the aims of the society overall and the accessibility of information and so on.
Afterwards our committee member and sufferer, Valma Le Feuvre, spoke about how she copes with day to day living and how being involved in all the get-togethers and exercises classes that Jersey Branch organises and funds helps her, and how sharing with others the problems that Parkinson's brings helps and how she values the support she gets from friends, other members and the branch.
 Gym sessions
Our gym classes at the Cheshire Homes are now into their fifth week and those attending are coping well with all the exercises at varying levels.
We have two spaces available at 4.30 p.m. on a Thursday for any sufferer who would be interested in a gentle workout. Please contact Eileen Smith by phone on 737128 for details

Jack Schofield is organising a trip to St. Catherine's on Wednesday, April 30th 2008. Lunch will be at 12 noon and fishing will commence between 1.15 p.m. and 1.30 p.m. This is a free outing for members and supporters and spectators are welcome. Prizes will be awarded, not necessarily for the fish caught, I'm sure by the end of the month some of you will be wearing shorts and I'm sure a prize could be arranged for the sexiest knees, who knows? Please contact Jack by phone on 738328 if you would like to join us.
Co-op can shake
Pam Turner has organised a week long can shake at the St. Peter store from the 19th - 24th May 2008. The rota is nearly complete, but if you would like to help, please contact Pam by phone on 732710.
Party for Parkinson's
Eileen Smith invites you to her home, Bisley, Westbourne Avenue, Bagatelle Lane, St. Saviour on Friday, May 30th 2008 between 10.30 a.m. and 12.30 p.m. for a coffee and biscuits. There will be a raffle, card stall and car boot stall. Permission for parking in Bagatelle Lane has been granted by the Parish, and Eileen is hoping that owners of the flats opposite will allow parking whilst they are gone to work.
Next meeting
We next meet at Communicare, St. Brelade, on Tuesday, 22nd April, 2008 at 8 p.m. Eileen Smith is organising a social evening with a Beetledrive and a Silent Auction to raise money towards branch running costs. This will be a very informal and fun night and I hope as many of you as possible will come along. There will be plenty time to chat. Refreshments and a raffle will round off the evening. Transport can be arranged by contacting Ken Le Quesne on 854769 or Eileen Smith on 737128.
