Last month, Eileen Smith organised a "Blockbuster" type quiz where the first letter/s of the answer is given before the clue. Out of a possible 80 points, Kay, Carol, Berni and Maureen scored 73, Marguerite and Monica 661/2 , June and Valma 66, Eileen Palmer and Peggy 551/2 and bringing up the rear, our three wise monkeys, Ken, Jack and Winston scored 52. A lot of fun and laughter was what the evening was all about, rounded off by the prize giving, our usual raffle and refreshments.

Carers courses 2008
Are you caring for someone in their own home?
Do you sometimes struggle to cope?
Do you sometimes feel under pressure?
Why not join the St. John Ambulance carers support programme.
You will receive information and training based around accidents that are likely to occur in the home, and what action to take in the event of a trip or fall. The programme includes introduction to caring skills, safer handling, stress management and benefits available from Social Security.
The next available programme takes place on Fridays between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. and will run fortnightly from September 12th to October 24th.
If interested, please contact Mrs Lynn Bouchard, tel: 735611.
Shaver for sale
Remington Washable Titanium with 2 super flexing foils for a fast, close shave.
Paid £44.99, asking £25 towards branch funds. Used once only. Please contact Eileen Smith on 737128 if interested.
Family Nursing membership
Earlier this year we mentioned a corporate membership, which the branch would pay to cover Parkinson's members belonging to Family Nursing.
We are very surprised how few of you actually belong, and it will not be possible to get a reasonable deal regarding this membership. The 10% discount offered by Family Nursing remains, if you are a member of PDS Jersey, and the branch will be happy to assist with funding if anyone is facing financial hardship.
Contact Eileen Smith on 737128 if you have any queries.
For those members attending the gym at Cheshire Homes, could you please phone Anne-Marie, Head Physio, direct on 285858 if you are unable to attend the class for any reason.
Some weeks the extra physios are being called in unnecessarily.
If prior notification has been made, some weeks we could easily amalgamate both classes, thus reducing the cost to the branch.
About three weeks ago one of the voluntary physios at the gym at Cheshire Homes suggested a ten-pin bowls match against PD sufferers who attend the gym and their partners and the four physios who run the Thursday afternoon class.
This took place on the evening of Monday, August 11th and congratulations go to Steve, Phil, Sarah, Anne-Marie, Camilla and Eddie of the Cheshire Homes who won the match scoring 1203 over two games. The PD team scored 1159 and a big well done go to Jack Schofield, Valma Le Feuvre, Marg and Ken Le Quesne and Piero and Eileen D'Ulivo for playing so well.

Nancy Le Brun
Sadly, committee member Nancy Le Brun passed away at the end of July. Nancy had been a very loyal committee member for nearly 20 years, her mother having suffered from Parkinson's many many years ago when there wasn't any medication, information or support available. Nancy was more than willing to give of her time with all aspects of fundraising. A considerable amount in donations has been received in her memory.
Nancy was a resident at Pinewood Residential Home at Mont Millais for the last ten years and was very happy there and was grateful for the care given by Eileen Crabb and her dedicated team.
Help With Movement
How many of you have difficulty taking that first step when you want to walk, your feet always rooted to the floor refusing to step forward? Several of you I imagine. Never fear, help is near. The physios at Neurocare will be holding courses this autumn involving "cueing". No you do not need to bring your snooker cue, this will be visual and audio stimulation.
To give us an idea of numbers etc. please contact Eileen Smith on 737128 if you would like to be included.
Watch this space for more details!
Valma Le Feuvre is organising a lunch at The Priory, Devil's Hole on Friday 29th August 2008, at 12.30 p.m. for 1 o'clock. This is a free outing for sufferers and carers and paying supporters are welcome to join us. Please phone Valma on 734044 no later than Monday 25th August 2008 to book.
Transport can be arranged. A raffle will be organised in aid of branch running costs.
Eileen Smith will be organising a Jersey mystery tour by vintage coach with afternoon tea sometime in September, possibly Tuesday 9th or 16th. This tour seeks out areas of Jersey that many islanders don't know about and explores many hidden lanes, valleys and spectacular countryside aboard Tantivy's vintage coach.
Before a date and venue can be booked, Eileen needs some idea of how many of you would be interested in this outing Please phone Eileen during the next fortnight on 737128.
Webb Ivory catalogue
The 2008 Christmas fundraising catalogue is now available. Members living in the east of the island will have theirs delivered with this month's newsletter and those members living in the west will receive their copy next month.
Jersey branch receives about 40p for every £1 spent. Please contact Eileen Smith on 737128 if you would like to place an order.
Communicare is always closed during August, therefore a meeting will not take place now until September for which you will be notified in next month's newsletter.
