JANUARY 2006

Happy New Year
Eileen and the Committee send you their best wishes for 2006 and hope you all enjoyed the company of family and friends during Christmas time.
Last Meeting
November seems ages ago, but Marjorie Syvret gave a very informative talk about Jersey history and recounted much folklore as well, some with tongue in cheek I must admit!
Eileen is putting together a list of speakers for 2006, and needs your input.
Do you want afternoon meetings rather than evening ones?
Do you want to hear about light hearted non medical matters or do you want more information on Parkinson's Disease and other health issues?
What do you the Parkinson sufferer, want from your committee and your branch? Phone Eileen on 737128.

Used Stamps
Roger Marriott is to be congratulated on selling £728.00's worth of stamps in November. This was stamps which have accumulated over many years, but Roger found the right dealer who took everything he had. Well done Roger, and Joyce for helping. So please keep saving your used stamps. Phone Roger on 731145 if you need them to be collected.
Card Sales
Thank yous go to Cindy Le Feuvre of Eclipse Hair Design and Sue Atkey-Smith of Cititrust who sold £92.50 and £113.00 worth of Christmas cards to clients and colleagues at their place of work.
Raffle
At the Christmas Crafts Fair in November, the Living Legend decided to organise a raffle, the proceeds of which to be divided between Parkinson's, Children in Need and Hospice. A total of £1710 was raised and we have received £570.00 towards branch funds. Thank you to Graham McConnell of The Living Legend for organising this, and for supporting Parkinson's.
Sincere Thanks
Eileen would like to thank all of you who work on the Society's behalf, whether by giving of your time to man our stalls, by donating raffle prizes or making donations towards fundraising expenses. Your support is very much appreciated.
Reclining Armchair
The Society has had donated an electric reclining armchair, colour dusky pink. If anyone wishes to see it or to try it out please phone Eileen on 737128. This would be on free loan to you for as long as you needed it.
Holiday 2006
The Society is once again funding a week's holiday in Southampton in May. If you would like to be included, please phone June Tredant on 861744. This trip is for sufferers and their carers only.
Subscriptions 2006
Your membership for this year is now due and it remains at £5.00 each. Please forward your cheque made payable to Parkinson's Disease Society to the Treasurer Mrs. P. Turner, La Ronde, Rue De Maupertuis, St. Clement, Jersey C.I. JE2 6NG together with the enclose renewal, thank you
.
 Collecting Boxes
Well done to Eileen Palmer and Jack Schofield for placing three boxes between them in November and to Eileen Palmer and Merle Roosen for placing seven between them in December. Keep up the good work! We do not have to work for this money. A big thank you goes to Ken Le Quesne who is responsible for changing the boxes on a regular basis and to June Tredant for doing all the counting and banking and cleaning and re-sealing the boxes. Thank you both for your input.
Cards for Good Causes
I am sure you are all aware of the Christmas cards that were sold at the Town Church for many charities in the U.K. including Parkinson's.
Local charities do not receive any percentage of sales unless they send a volunteer to act as cashier and are actually informed that they may be fined for not doing so. Committee member, Nancy Le Brun, is to be thanked for the hours she worked each week from the end of October to the middle of December on our behalf. It will be interesting to see if Jersey branch receives any commission for her efforts. Well done Nancy and thank you!
Supporters Help Needed
We are looking for drivers! On occasions, our members who collect sufferers regularly for Dao Yin or swimming, have other obligations, and the Society sends and funds a taxi there and back.
Are you free on a Monday or Wednesday afternoon?
I am sure it would only be for an hour to collect and take to the venue or to collect and take home from the venue. Please contact Eileen Smith on 737128 if you would be willing to give up a little of your time for a sufferer or carer who cannot drive.
Dao Yin
There has been a change in the employment laws which has restricted the hours that tutors may work, together with less funding for the over 50's exercise programme. Therefore, to enable the Dao Yin class to continue, the Committee is now paying Tina Borfiga a fee to run our regular class on a Monday afternoon and has taken on the responsibility of finding and paying for a venue.
Georgetown Methodist Church Hall will be used until the end of January then we will be holding the class in the resources room at the new Overdale at Westmount.
We need more sufferers to join the class! It is the same old adage use it! Or loose it! Please contact Eileen Smith on 737128 if interested. We cannot emphasize enough how important some exercise is. Dao Yin is gentle, helps with posture, balance and circulation. Why not give it a try?
