MAY 2008

Last Meeting
At our meeting last month, Eileen Smith organised a Beetledrive and a Silent Auction. What "Silent Auction"? The firm alarm went off at about 8.25 p.m. halfway through the Beetledrive and we had to evacuate the building for about twenty minutes. Never mind, all's well that ends well, the fire brigade arrived, and switched off the alarm which was in an empty flat upstairs. The Beetledrive proceeded as well as bidding on the items in the auction.
Prizes were awarded for the Beetledrive and £57.50 was collected from goods sold in the auction, and lots of bargains were had.
Refreshments and our usual raffle ended a quite hectic yet fun evening.
Our bingo's and collecting boxes continue to generate a steady income for the branch, the following monies having been raised:-
2.4.08 Maillard's Auction
Sale of copper bed pan + hunting horn £20.00

Checkers can shake
Our week long can shake at the beginning of last month raised the magnificent sum of £1,400.76. Our thanks go to Pam Turner for organising it all, to Ken Le Quesne for providing the taxi service for our helpers and to Marg Le Quesne for counting and bagging all the money.
We are extremely grateful to all our supporters who filled the rota, this fund-raiser would not be possible without your help. Thank you everyone.
Party for Parkinson's
A big thank you goes to Jack Schofield for kicking off the party season and organising a whist drive at his home on April 21st 2008 and raising £50 towards branch funds. His hospitality was very much appreciated by those who attended.
Collecting Boxes
Two new outlets were found last month and we thank Kerry Buesnel and Pat Le Herissier for their efforts.
Relaxation CDs
Eileen Smith has acquired two copies of a relaxation CD prepared by Wendy Blackburn, an occupational therapist at Overdale. If you would like to borrow one, please contact Eileen by phone, on 737128.
Guernsey 2008
An information day with workshops is scheduled for Saturday October 4th, 2008. There is still time for you to put your name down. Possibly a day trip would appeal to some sufferers and carers rather than staying over. Flight bookings will be made shortly, so if you are interested in travelling with us could you please phone Marian Pitt on 721927 no later than the 1st June. The branch is more than happy to assist with travel expenses.
 Reclining Armchair
Could any sufferer make use of an electric reclining armchair? The branch has had a chair returned into storage and would like to help another sufferer for as long as he/she might need it. This would be on loan, for free. Please contact Eileen Smith by phone on 737128 if interested.
Used Stamps/Old Coins
Roger and Joyce Marriott, who have been responsible for sorting and selling stamps and coins for us, are moving to Ireland. Eileen would like to take this opportunity of thanking them both for the many hours they have spent over the years doing this, and generating funds for the branch.
Would any one like to take on this task? If interested, please contact Roger Marriott by phone on 731145. He would be very happy to let you know what would be involved. Unfortunately, if we do not find a volunteer, we will no longer collect used stamps or foreign/obsolete coins and will regrettably have to loose the income.

Thought for the Day from a Sufferer
"I am very much involved with the local PDS branch. Everyone listens to each other, and you just feel so much better when you come out. It really does help."
Social Get-together
Jack Schofield is organising ten pin bowling and lunch on Friday July 11th 2008 at 12 noon at Jersey Bowl, St. Peter, followed by lunch there at approximately 1.15 p.m. This is a free outing for sufferers and carers. We next meet at Communicare, St. Brelade, on Tuesday, 27th May, 2008 at 8 p.m. when our speaker will be Jane Vincent who is the Head Administrator of the J.S.P.C.A. She will be speaking about the day to day running of the Animal Shelter and will also show slides. She is also planning to bring a rescue dog with her.
A collection will be taken at the end of the evening towards the work of the J.S.P.C.A. Refreshments will be served and we will have our usual raffle.
Due to the timing of the group holiday to Edinburgh, next month you will not have a newsletter delivered. The June meeting at Communicare will take place on the 24th at 8 p.m. when Eileen Smith will be organising a quiz night.
Transport can be arranged. Please phone Ken Le Quesne on 854769 or Eileen Smith on 737128.
